E-bikes with a high maximum permissible weight

Why should you buy an e-bike with a high maximum permissible weight?

E-bikes with a high load capacity are still the exception on the market. Yet these supposed workhorses often make good sense, because with many e-bikes the maximum permissible weight is reached sooner than you'd like. We'll show you what to look out for when buying an e-bike.

Hardly any of us like talking about weight. But we have to here, and for good reason. Many cyclists don't realise that they often overload their bikes. Of course, with the help of the e-motor, you can easily haul the weekly shop and a crate of drinks home, and the sturdy construction of most e-bikes suggests that this is perfectly fine. But it's not quite that simple, even with electric bikes. Imagine a man weighing 85 kilograms sitting on an e-bike that weighs 30 kilograms, carrying 15 kilograms of shopping in panniers and a rucksack. The system weight (the sum of bike, rider and load) would already be 130 kilograms, not counting the weight of the man's clothing. In fact, most pedelecs are only designed for a maximum permissible weight of 120 kilograms. That's a problem: if the whole system is heavier, the bike's operating permit expires, because steering and handling suffer badly and, in the worst case, the frame can even break.

How can you tell the maximum permissible system weight of an e-bike?

Unfortunately, many bike manufacturers, and probably many dealers too, tend to be passive when it comes to load capacity and maximum total weight. Usually they state the permissible total weight only in the small print of the user manual. On top of that, many manufacturers test their e-bikes to the European standard EN 15194, which is valid up to a system weight of 120 kilograms. In reality, this test range is poorly suited to the overloading that pedelecs realistically encounter. But don't panic: as a rule, bike manufacturers build reserves into their frame designs to guard against damage from material fatigue.

Of course, the responsibility doesn't lie with manufacturers or dealers alone. How are they supposed to know how the customer wants to use the e-bike, or how heavy the buyer is? And to be honest, customers often focus on the motor, battery, design and finish when choosing an everyday e-bike. Appeal and performance are therefore the main factors in the purchase decision. We advise a sensible approach here. If you want to buy an e-bike, please don't just look at the motor, battery, range, weight (of the bike alone), top speed, or whether the bike has been named test winner by a trade magazine. Instead, think carefully about how you want to use the bike, whether as a trekking or touring bike, a commuter bike or a shopping bike, and then check the maximum permissible weight (system weight or gross vehicle weight).

Better and safer mobility with the Ca Go CS

If you're heavy yourself, or you know you'll often be transporting heavy items, it's best to look straight at a cargo bike or multi-purpose bike. Large cargo bikes such as the Ca Go FS200 Multi aren't for everyone, though. As a long john bike, the FS manages a system weight of 225 kilograms, but because of its design it may not be quite as manoeuvrable as a standard e-bike. For commuters, or riders who carry normal everyday loads but still want to be agile and nimble, the Ca Go CS is therefore a great way to get through daily life on two wheels. With a maximum permissible weight of a hefty 180 kilograms, it carries shopping, drinks crates and even a child with ease. It can be ridden comfortably by cyclists between 1.60 and 2 metres tall, which makes it very well suited to heavier riders too.

The Triple Load Space – it doesn't get easier than this

With a system weight of up to 180 kilograms, the agile Ca Go CS is a game changer in the everyday lives of two-wheel enthusiasts. Suppose a rider weighs 90 kilograms including clothing. With the CS weighing 35 kilograms itself, that still leaves 55 kilograms of load capacity. A big shop can hardly be heavier than that. In theory, the Ca Go CS can even carry up to 80 kilograms of cargo. The clever part is that shopping and other loads are spread across three load platforms on the CS. This Ca Go-developed Triple Load Space is divided into the Front Rack (up to 18 kilograms), the Center Rack (35 kilograms) and the Rear Rack (27 kilograms). Distributing the load in this way means the bike, not least thanks to its cable-pull steering, can be manoeuvred easily and effortlessly even around the tightest corners. What's more, even a 35-kilogram load on the Center Rack doesn't affect the handling of the CS because of its low centre of gravity; if anything, it improves it.

Optimal loading and typical uses

As mentioned above, heavy loads belong on the low Center Rack of the Ca Go CS. A crate of water or beer? No problem. At 30 x 40 centimetres, the rack is designed for Euro crates and therefore for most common drinks crates. If you need to take a large but not-so-heavy parcel to the post office, the Front Rack is ideal, especially when fitted with the Extended Front Rack (fitted as standard on all CS models). At 40 x 60 centimetres, this one is also made for standard Euro crates. Another advantage: up front, you always have your fragile cargo in view. But with the Ca Go CS you can carry more than parcels or shopping: it's also possible to transport children. Child seats can easily be mounted on the Rear Rack, in the classic, safe position behind the cycling parent. And because of the bike's design, child seats can also be fitted to the seat post of the Ca Go CS.

The Ca Go CS – a versatile all-rounder among e-bikes

If you choose the Ca Go CS as your new e-bike, you don't just get a high load capacity. You also get plenty of ways to carry it, because Ca Go's engineers have developed a wealth of accessories that turn the bike into a kind of Swiss Army knife.

Let's start with the Center Rack. As mentioned, this is where you can carry heavy items such as drinks crates very conveniently. For this very load space in the centre of the CS, Ca Go has now designed the Expandable Center Bag. It's fitted in place of the standard Center Rack and is a kind of luxury alternative to it, available straight from the factory as the CS Vario. The Expandable Center Bag is the lockable boot of your CS. A fold-out, water-repellent bag is supported by an auxiliary frame. This keeps your belongings out of sight and relatively safe from theft, as the Expandable Center Bag can be secured with a small combination lock. It's called "Expandable" because you can double the bag's volume from 25 to 50 litres. So you can travel light with your CS, or leave yourself the option of carrying a drinks crate, protected from the weather and prying eyes.

Versatility thanks to the MIK adapter plate

Shopping basket, panniers, the large cargo box or just the basic rack? To make the CS as versatile as possible, Ca Go's developers have designed a MIK adapter plate for the existing rack mount. Once you've screwed this adapter plate to your basket, bag or, say, a toolbox, no tools are needed for mounting it on the bike in seconds. The quick-release is undone from above with a special tool. With closed transport solutions, this makes it difficult or impossible for anyone else to get at the contents. Unlike many similar solutions, the Ca Go MIK adapter plate doesn't limit the maximum load of the front or rear rack; depending on the dimensions of the attachment, the system can take up to 27 kilograms of cargo.
